Buying LEGO® for someone else

Short answer. Start with the age on the box, then pick a theme the person already likes and check the set number before you buy.

Four quick checks

  1. Check the age

The number with a plus on the box (4+, 7+, 18+) says how hard the build is. A child who builds a lot can go a year or two above their age; a child new to LEGO does better at their age or just below.

  2. DUPLO or LEGO?

DUPLO has big bricks for small hands, from 18 months. Standard LEGO starts at 4+. Its small parts are a choking risk, so keep it away from under-3s, however well they build. The two click together, so DUPLO is never wasted.

  3. Choose their theme

Ask what they already have or love, and pick a set from the same theme: City, Friends, Star Wars, Minecraft and more. If you can't ask, a Creator 3in1 box builds three different models.

  4. Match the set number

Every set has a number of four to six digits on the box. Ask for it with the wish, search for it at the store, and check that it matches before you buy.

LEGO Duplo open-ended building brick set

Ages 1.5+ (LEGO) 85 pieces · set 10914

Loose bricks with no fixed model, so they click onto any DUPLO already at home.

Plain bricks join whatever sits on the shelf, so this box can't clash with a set the child owns. With no model to follow, a tower, a house or a bed for a favorite doll all count as finished. The box itself then holds every set that comes later.

LEGO Duplo alphabet truck building set

Ages 2+ (Brickset) 36 pieces · set 10421

Letters and wheels share one toy here: an alphabet truck a toddler builds and steers across the living room rug.

Pushing it around is the main event, and the letter bricks come along on every trip. When you hum the ABC song slowly and pause on a letter, the game turns into a hunt through the bricks for that one.

LEGO Duplo vehicle brick building set

Ages 1.5+ (LEGO) 42 pieces · set 10474

Whatever rolls past the house, a garbage truck or the mail truck, is fair game for a toddler's next build with these Duplo vehicle bricks.

A lopsided bus counts as much as a neat one, and wheels turn every attempt into something to push. A row of finished rides in the hallway makes a traffic jam you can both honk at.

LEGO Minecraft pig house building set

Ages 7+ (LEGO) 238 pieces · set 21268

The Baby Pig House brings the animal side of Minecraft into LEGO bricks for a young player who keeps pigs in the game.

The Wolf Hero and Zombified Piglin minifigures give every story around the house a hero and a troublemaker. Once built, the house stays on a bookshelf between rounds of play.

LEGO Minecraft taiga scene building set

Ages 6+ (Brickset) 79 pieces · set 21583

Minecraft's Steve and a Creeper come as LEGO figures in this taiga set for a young Minecraft player.

Both characters come straight from the game, so its showdowns play out by hand across the finished build. Between rounds, the scene rests on a desk beside the game controller.
